OscarTango Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 Sunday sad-act time: Can someone explain to me exactly how tirfors work? I know the mechanical advantage, but what actual mechanism is in the guts of the thing? Is it some sort of cam or crank? How is that mechanical advantage actually gained? Also, who still carries them and do they see much use? We still do but I've probably only used it twice.
BurtMacklin Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 All the FRU’s in London have them, most people favour the vehicle mounted winch but the Tirfor comes in handy when you can’t get the angle for a pull or you need more control over the speed of the pull. Unfortunately they, in their infinite wisdom, reduced the number of snatch blocks we carry from 2 to 1 for no logical reason.
JonnyHolbs Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 Carried on FRUs in London. Oxfordshire still carry them on pumping appliances also.
Noddy Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 All West Midlands trucks have them and I used one just the other week at a fatal fire to pull a burned out car from a garage 👍
HB2016 Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Still carry them in Hampshire on P1/P7 and use it more often than you'd think.
TandA Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 Essex still have them. Have used ours a number of times.
